Bolton Impact Trust Academies are moving towards being trauma-aware. A trauma-aware approach supports children to make sense of their experience(s) find ways to manage their emotions and feelings. Creates an environment of safety, connection and compassion at all times. Builds a school trust network of strong, positive relationships through training.
Trauma-aware teaching starts with an understanding of how trauma can impact learning and behaviour. With this approach, educators think about what pupil’s behaviour may be telling them. And they reflect on their teaching practices to find ways to better support pupils who may be experiencing trauma.
The below PowerPoint presentation explains the principles and practice of the trauma-informed approach and includes the following:
- First Steps
- Information about trauma and a definition from Gabor Mate
- Information about Adverse Childhood Experiences and data
- The five ways to well-being
PACE
At Bolton Impact Trust we are using PACE by Dan Hughes as a way of being for our pupils. PACE is a way of thinking, feeling, communication and behaving that aims to make a child feel safe. Our Therapeutic Specialist has started to deliver PACE training to our academy staff and parents who have attend the Parent/Carer drop-in sessions.
